Hallux valgus — a painful bunion

When pressure from a shoe or the position of your big toe changes your step, we start with your symptoms and a foot assessment.

01

Recognise the problem.

The big toe drifts towards the neighbouring toes. Pain, irritation from footwear and difficulty walking can occur. Appearance alone does not decide treatment.

02

Assessment in your everyday life.

We discuss your symptoms, shoes and activities. An examination and, when appropriate, standing X-rays help assess bone alignment and the joints.

03

A plan adapted to your foot.

Wider footwear and measures that reduce pressure may ease symptoms. Persistent pain despite nonsurgical care can prompt a discussion about correction and recovery.

Understanding the foot

Foot shape, footwear, movement and imaging findings all have a place in the conversation. We look at them together during an assessment.
