Hip osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis, also called coxarthrosis, can cause pain, stiffness and reduced movement. For one person, longer walks become difficult; for another, putting on socks or rising from a chair is a challenge. Symptoms and their impact vary between individuals.

01

Recognising the pain pattern

Pain is often felt in the groin and may spread towards the thigh or knee. Stiffness may follow a period of rest. However, not all pain around the hip is osteoarthritis: a discussion and examination help establish the cause.

02

Examination and relevant tests

A clinician assesses walking, hip movement and painful movements, and reviews existing reports. X-rays or other tests are requested when needed to clarify the findings or plan care. Explain which everyday tasks are becoming difficult for you.

03

From non-surgical care to considering surgery

A plan may include tailored exercise, advice on loading and weight where relevant, and pain management with an assessment of its risks. When symptoms still substantially affect daily life despite treatment, surgical options may be discussed. Decisions require an explanation of potential benefits, risks and realistic expectations.
