Knee osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis, also called gonarthrosis, may cause pain, stiffness and difficulty walking or using stairs. Imaging findings are only one part of an assessment. How your knee affects everyday movement and activities is just as important.

01

Symptoms worth discussing

Pain may increase with loading, and the knee may feel stiff after sitting. Swelling or a feeling of instability can occur. Clicking alone does not confirm osteoarthritis. An assessment also considers other causes of pain, including the effects of an earlier injury.

02

An individual assessment

The discussion covers symptom duration, previous injuries and the activities you want to maintain. A clinician assesses movement, stability and walking. Tests are selected according to clinical need. Bring previous reports and a medication list so the plan can consider your overall health.

03

Care options

Tailored exercise and adjustments to activity load often form the basis of care. Weight management, walking aids and pain treatment may be considered where appropriate. Surgical options depend on symptoms and the response to previous treatment. No approach guarantees that every symptom will disappear; goals are agreed individually.
